Dip in...
This small company of professional performers, with their director Martin Harvey, had a yen to explore the lesser-known small-scale operas, and with their first production of Benjamin Britten’s Turn of the Screw in Killerton House in 2004, Staircase Opera was born.
Despite this early success, individual careers intervened, until in 2016 the company re-formed and presented The Medium by Gian-Carlo Menotti in Exeter’s historic Guildhall, Torquay’s Torre Abbey and Crediton’s Congregational Church. Menotti’s The Consul followed in 2019 at the University of Exeter’s Roborough Studio and toured to Ashburton Arts Centre and Sidholme in Sidmouth in early 2020.
As well as gaining a reputation for these dramatic chamber operas, Staircase Opera enjoys growing popularity for its concerts of staged excerpts from the more main-stream and well-known operas.
